DREAMCATCHER - Costume and Make Up

The Rhizomatic Collective Unconscious Dreamcatcher

COSTUME and MAKE UP

The concept for Dreamcatcher costume and make up is that of being an extension of the Dreamcatcher installation. A living part of the whole.

The performer is embodying the networks portrayed by the Dreamcatcher:

Mycorrhizal fungal networks beneath the forest floor

Neural networks of the brain

Physical form of the Dreamcatcher as a net or “web”

COSTUME and MAKE UP GUIDANCE for PERFORMERS:

(Depending on the performance situation, some of these details may not apply - However, this includes guidance for a full production version of the project.)

ALL COSTUME AND MAKE UP IS WHITE

Various shades of white - warm whites veering towards cream and cool whites veering towards gray.

ALL NATURAL SKIN AND HAIR SHOULD BE COVERED

Either by materials or by make up and paint.

HAIR

If you already have very light hair (white, pale blonde or pale gray) that’s fabulous!

Otherwise, be creative - use white paints, hairsprays, wigs, hair pieces or other head coverings in-keeping with the Dreamcatcher aesthetic.

You can sculpt the hair with gels to achieve a ‘tendrily’ effect.

You could add texture with clay or flours (such as rice flour)

Feel free to experiment!

SKIN

Again … feel free to experiment with white make ups, paints and powders.

Or you could opt for wearing long white tights …. (You can also wear tights on the upper body and arms by cutting a hole in the crotch area for your head.)

You can texture them by scrubbing on a rough surface and maybe some small slashes - or apply paint.

COSTUME

Costuming should give the effect of being an extension of the Dreamcatcher sculpture.

Lots of layers and tendrils of materials in various shades and textures of white.

You may want to have one main piece of clothing as an under-layer - onto which you attach other pieces.

(I can provide a number of options for costume pieces, as well as extra tendrils of the Dreamcatcher fabrics.)

ACCESSORIES

Included in the Dreamcatcher sculpture are a number of symbolic objects.

These can be any objects that are understood to be universally symbolic (such as feathers, shells, beads, religious objects) but you can also bring objects that are personally symbolic. But they must be WHITE in color.

These objects can be worn as accessories as well as attached into the Dreamcatcher during the performance.

EXAMPLES

I have included some examples of BUTOH dance costume and make up.

This gives a sense of the various possibilities for experimentation with costume and make up for the Dreamcatcher project.
